My life with Lipedema & Lymphedema...destined to be fat.

My Guide to the Perfect Beach Body

Relaxing in Key West

It’s Memorial Day Weekend, the Unofficial Kick Off to Summer! Are you ready for the beach? I am! Last weekend I unpacked my summer wardrobe and found no fewer than 10 swimsuits! My best friend pointed out that I have equal number of sunglasses and beach towels to match each suit. She knows me so well!

Since I am more than prepared for the warmer weather I wanted to share my advice for how to get that PERFECT BEACH BODY:

1. Pick out a cute swimsuit – I suggest trying on various styles to find the suit that flatters your figure and features. I know many women default to skirted bottoms to “hide” their legs and hips. In my case, skirts do not flatter my hips, and lets be honest nothing is going to hide my legs…and be safe to swim in. There are however many options, out there, swim board shorts, rash guard shirts.  And of course this season’s FATKINI by Gabi Gregg,  if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one.  I found the halter top neckline looks nice on me, draws attention to me face which is one of my BEST features.

2. Put on your cute swimsuit – add a nice pair of sunglasses and sun screen!

3. Go to the beach – or the pool, lake, river, water park (I love Typhoon Lagoon…and looking forward to OAC at AZ Grand)

4. Smile – have fun, enjoy your day.

There is no such thing as a PERFECT body, no shake, or DVD is going to make you perfect. I learned long ago that people will comment on my appearance whether I am in a swimsuit or fully clothed, so I pay them no mind. Life is too short to keep worrying about what others think, ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!

Well said and well written. I too have lipedema and share the same challenges. Living in acceptance is far better than living in shame. Thank you for your strength

Kathy, There are so many women who say “I can’t go to the beach, I can’t be seen in a swimsuit”, well there was a time when I physically could not go to the beach because I could not walk on the sand without failing, etc. So I am thankful for the progress I’ve made and the abilities I do have! Life is too short!

I have a medical condition called Lipedema, there is plenty of information on my blog about this condition. Would you shame a cancer patient about their appearance?

I’m guessing starving people have a condition that makes them skinny too? Being fat isn’t a disease it’s a lifestyle choice and a poor one at that. Eat less, eat better, and exercise
Also how dare you compare yourself to a cancer patient. They suffer horribly because their body failed them, and then you seek safe haven in their misery after you abuse your body.

The entire purpose of my blog is to bring awareness to a disease I suffer from called Lipedema. There are several posts about the condition and links to other informational websites. Feel free to take a look around and education yourself before leaving any further comments of this nature.

Try raising awareness about proper diet and exercise instead. It has been proven time and time again that eating right and exercising will prevent someone from looking like a pile of sausage.
There is absolutely NO REASON why your body would accumulate fat like it does without the energy to do so. Some people do generate fat easier than others, but that can be compensated for with… you guessed it! proper diet and exercise.

Put your blog to good use by changing your habits and quit promoting this disgusting lifestyle to other people too lazy and stupid to do it themselves. Because apparently there isn’t enough evidence supporting what has been known for thousands of years maybe you could write an article about how to actually get a beach body.

The reason is called Lipedema. You have no knowledge of my lifestyle or diet to base your negative judgement. Actually if you read other areas of my blog you would see that I do exercise. It is MY blog, so I will post and do as I want, which includes fighting the stigma and bias exhibited by your comment.

Lipedema isn’t a reason to be morbidly obese.
Lipedema affect the fat storage spots by targeting more specifically the lower part of the body to store fat.
If you don’t gain weight by eating like a hungry hippo, this isn’t affected in the first place and you won’t probably even know that you have that condition.
If you lose weight, you’ll still have the “empty” fat cells that will then be able to be removed via liposuction. You will only have to maintain that weight if you don’t want to look like you look like now again.

Also it’s easy to hide being morbidly obese behind a medical condition, but lipedema doesn’t make you fat. It makes your legs fatter.
And looking at your upper body, even without lipedema you’d be morbidly obese. What would you hide your lack of discipline and self control with it you didn’t have lipedema ?

Btw, I have a M.D and a PhD in immunodeficiency diseases. So I guess you won’t be able to hide behind “You have no knowledge of xxx”.

I’d like to see what you eat in a given day, what your basic diet is like, I guarantee you don’t have a balanced diet.

If you eat at a caloric deficit, Lipedema or no, your body will lose mass.

You don’t have to be stick thin but you’re morbidly obese, and it’s not ok.

Well said! I’m really sorry about your wait for the summer, me and my wife are looking forward to following this simplistic guide for our bulking up for summer fun! We’re going to our local beach called Hamp Lanet and I won’t have to worry about my weight nor will my wife (who is pretty skinny). You look terrific too, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

    Love, Scooby

You’re right, they don’t sit and over eat all day.

Sometimes they move and over eat. Not too often though.

Wow, Sarah, I can’t believe the ignorance of the people who’ve left nasty comments. You suggested over and over they read about Lipedema but they chose to stay in the dark and just post ridiculous comments. Shaking my damn head – what is wrong with people?

You’re an inspiration for many. Keep up the good work!

I also suffer from Lymphedema and Lipedeama.
It amazes me of the lack of knowledge behind those stupid comments.
Tall, short, fat, skinny it doesn’t matter. People of all shapes and sizes have this disease.

Let the stupid people continue to be stupid.
They are the first ones that will die when the world ends because of lack of knowledge and understanding.

    P.S. Great blog! 🙂

“Management involves reducing dietary sodium intake, frequent, gentle exercise to promote circulation in the legs, such as rebound exercise, and treatments typical for lymphedema treatment.”
i suggest doing a three day split and reducing your sodium intake as aforementioned.
