Thanks for visiting my blog, many people have found this review very helpful. I wrote the review because as a person with Lipedema it is difficult to find products that can accommodate my excess weight.
Original post 3/13/10 – Let’s start with a moment of silence for the innocent furniture victims whose lives I cut short: 1 recliner, 1 plastic lawn chair (honest only 1), 1 tree house step, 1 wooden dining room chair, 2 couches, 2 box springs, and 1 metal bed frame.
You know how difficult it is to find JUST a box spring??? Probably about as difficult as it is to get information from IKEA.
My current full size bed is 7 years old. My mom bought it for me after I had major surgery. At the time I had given up on bed frames and had my broken box spring and mattress on my floor. When my mom bought my current bed she bought an extra support beam. Thanks Mom!
However, it wouldn’t matter how many support beams were underneath because the beams tip over. Currently, both beams are tipped over so I am only supported by the perimeter frame…and it’s still holding up!!! But, the frame has wheels, and my floors are wooden. It’s the easily shifting frame that causes the beams to fall. I could just be turning over in bed, the wheels move, the beams fall. It’s annoying. Also, I got rid of the brass headboard two moves ago because it never stayed secure to the frame.
In the end, I decided I want/need a new bed. I don’t have a lot of $$$ for this. I want to keep the mattress so I figure just stay with full size for now and in few more years I can upgrade to a queen bed (or king…I think that discussion is still on the table).
So looking around I found IKEA has some inexpensive bed frames. I have bought several chests of drawers, office chair, and other items from IKEA and have been impressed. But a bed? I mean a chest of drawers made out of particle board and foil is one thing…but a bed?
I asked for some opinions. I Googled. Then I did what any smart person would do and I asked IKEA!
I flat out told them what I weighed and asked for the weight limit/capacity of the two beds I was interested in.
This was there reply:
Hello Sarah,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us.
This product does not have a published weight limit. It is a well designed product and will provide good function for which it is designed. The design, weight capacity and function of each product undergoes test to ensure the product will hold up to normal use. If the product is used for something other than the designed function, IKEA is not responsible for loss to personal injury or property.
We do hope that this information has been helpful, and we thank you for your inquiry.
Best Regards,
IKEA Customer Care Center
So can I get the weight capacity at which you test the product??? And what is “normal use”. My mind could twist that in all sorts of directions. But basically I want to know, will the bed hold my fat ass and an occasional slumber party buddy?
Today I’m going to IKEA and jumping on beds. If I get arrested for vandalism, please someone post my bail.
UPDATE
Withing minutes of posting this blog entry IKEA replied to my follow-up e-mail I sent last night asking if I could get the tested weight capacity. I think it’s just coincidence.
Hello Sarah,
Thank you for your reply. We are glad to hear from you again.
As the weight in a bed is generally not motionless an exact weight limit cannot be determined. However, for full beds the largest weight that has been placed on these beds is 440 lbs so we would not recommend exceeding that weight.
We do hope that this information has been helpful, and we thank you for your inquiry.
Best Regards,
IKEA Customer Care Center
As the weight in a bed is generally not motionless —- I’ll have to behave myself. As for the 440lbs…guess that means no slumber party buddy. =(
***Update to the Update***
I have now owned the IKEA LEIRVIK Bed frame for 3 years and I am very impressed with the quality of this bed. First, let’s start with the price $89.00 for a full size bed frame is EXCELLENT. $89.00 for any bed frame that can hold a SMO individual is unheard of, $89 for a bed that can hold TWO SMO individuals “in motion” is a super bed! Like all IKEA furniture the bed came in flat boxes that easily fit into the trunk of a two-door car, we did have to remove the headboard from it’s packaging. The key to this bed is it’s metal and comes with a steel beam center support bar. It was easy to assemble and has plenty of under bed storage space. I LOVE this bed, as I consider upgrading to a Queen size bed I think I’ll stick with the IKEA LEIRVIK. Note: I used my own mattress and box spring, the box spring makes the bed a bit high, but since I already had my own set there was no need to purchase the foundation or slats from IKEA.
I also wanted to write IKEA Customer Service to let them know, we have thoroughly “tested” their bed and it’s weight capacity exceeds 440lbs. Which again is AWESOME, we do not need any trips to the ER.
If you have a question about the Leirvik bed frame, please leave a comment and I will reply!

You’re welcome! Enjoy!

Love your sense of humor! The moment of silence for the furniture you’ve had to lay to rest was killer! Hee, Hee! I can so relate, as I am a big girl myself. Thanks for the tip!
Sarah Bramblette says
Thanks for your kind comment! You know it’s strange we have some plastic lawn chairs over 20 years old that still hold up, but some of these new ones snap when they see me coming.
Natalie says
Thanks for this review Sarah. I was worried this bed wouldn’t last long term as sometimes IKEA furniture does usually last very long (IMO).
This bed is definitely getting purchased this weekend
Thanks Again

Sarah,
Thank you so very much for taking the time to review this bed, and especially the update. I am shopping for beds for a vacation home, and don’t want my guests to be falling down, but don’t want to spend a fortune on the beds. I hope IKEA gives you some freebies or something because I will be ordering based on your review.
born2lbfat says
You’re welcome. I don’t get anyhying IKEA in exchange for the review. Just did it to be helpful to others. But if IKEA reads this, I’d like to upgrade to a QUEEN. 🙂
Richelle says
Great info and you rock . You had me laughing out loud. Question for you, you do use a box spring. Do you have to use a dust ruffle with the box spring?? Not sure if I should just do the slats
Sarah Bramblette says
Bed skirt doesn’t work well since there is a foot board. I didn’t use one, my box spring was sightly visible but I didn’t care.
Brittany says
Sarah, Thank you so much for being you! I’ve been looking around for reviews of IKEA beds and they’re all girls that’re worried about themselves at 160… and that’s not helpful to me, who’s about 50lbs more than that!! Do you think the other beds would do the trick? or is that one just special because of the steel…
hmmmmmm Off to Ikea to jump around for testing. 🙂
thanks doll
born2lbfat says
I have friends who have the queen Malm bed, and it is very sturdy, held several of us sitting on it to play Rock Band as they had their gaming system in bedroom. From what I read the key to the other beds is proper assembly, which can be more complex than the Leivik bed.
Claire says
Do your friends have the Malm bed that has the mattress that pops up revealing storage underneath? I’ve been looking at that one, but worried the slats wouldn’t be enough.
Sarah Bramblette says
I don’t know the exact type they have and no longer live near them.
Amy says
Thank you so much for this review! I’ve been looking for a bed just like this but for dirt cheap – I was just concerned that it was so dirt cheap! Also, thank you for your clarification about the whole box springs/slatted base thing. Ikea has always confused me with their slatted base, so it’s good to know since I have a box spring that I don’t need that extra piece.
Jourdi says
I just have to say, I have searched and searched and SEARCHED for information regarding my dream bed, the very bed you reviewed, to no avail with information on size etc etc.
You’re amazing! Thank you SO much! I have had HELL for a back for the last two weeks due to a broken box frame, and I just can’t handle it anymore! I’ve been eyeing this bed frame for YEARS, and you have been the only person I have seen actually review it from a perspective I could understand. So, thank you so much! And happy bed playing :p or…whatever…LOL Ok just being awkward now :P!
born2lbfat says
You’re welcome…sorry for the delayed reply I was on vacation being awkward…lol.
caroline says
Thanks for this review! So just to clarify, the slatts are not necessary if we have box spring? Thank you!
born2lbfat says
Correct! No slats needed if you are using a box spring.
Marie says
Actually, I bought this and got it home to find out, I needed the slats – despite having a box spring. I don’t know if my particular bed frame is maybe a manufacturers defect and 1/2 inch too small, but I have a standard full sized mattress (and box spring) that fit into other standard full size bed frames, and it fell right through this one. It was about 1/4 inch off on one side from sitting on the ledge of this frame. So I’d suggest measuring – you might need the slats, but it’s not likely.
I had to go back, buy the slats, and get rid of the box spring – it was too high for me.
However, otherwise this is a fantastic review. My own slumber parties have worked out well in this bed. Except it started squeaking after about 6 months.
SC says
Marie – hopefully you get to read this – my Leirvik bed also started squeaking a little bit after I moved it around and then I had to take it down and assemble it again after a move which resulted in even louder squeaking. Someone checked it for me and the problem was that the screws weren’t tight enough. So if you have this bed you can’t move it around once assembled you need to leave it in one place. You also need to be extra careful when assembling and make sure every screw is tight. Since then my bed has made zero noise 🙂
Elee says
Yes my leirvik bed makes a lot of noise too, it squeaks just gettin on it or turning on the bed..it was getting annoying. Thanks for the tip I’m going to try and tighten the screws, hope this works.
Brittney arjon says
Do I need the cenet beam if using boxspring
angela says
hi sara and thank u so much because of u im going to buy the ikea leirvik bed.
Maggie says
Hi Sara, thanks so much for the update! But I have one more question: I already bought a queen size nonikea mattress. Can I put it directly on the frame without a box? Does the frame hold the mattress?
born2lbfat says
You will need either slats, foundation, or box spring. The frame will not hold just the mattress as there is just the side rails and the center steel beam. If/when I have the ability I’ll get a picture of the frame without the box spring and mattress to show exactly how it comes.
Lily says
Any chance you’ve had a chance to take those pictures. I was googling about this bed and your wonderful blog came up. Thank you by the way for the detailed information. It’s priceless!
Jill says
I’ve been wanting a simple, inexpensive bed frame for my guest bedroom. Saw this at Ikea and wondered if it was too cheap to hold a couple of adults without collapsing in the floor. Well, tonight’s Google search for Leirvik bed frame reviews resulted in finding your detailed review and update for this very bed. Thanks for taking the time to post good information that others can use to make a good purchasing decision. I’ll be stopping in this week to buy one. Regarding the slats ~ my son bought the Ikea platform bed a few years ago and got the slatted base. It did not last and we replaced it with (4) slats all the way from one side to the other with the center support beam in place. I have always used slats made from 1 x 2’s from my local DIY big box store in addition to a box spring. My feeling is the slats give extra stability to the weight of my queen size mattress, box spring, and the people lying on them. Thanks again!
JK says
Thanks for posting this information! I’ve been looking for something that tells me the exact number of inches between the floor and bottom of the bed frame so that I can figure out if my luggage will fit underneath. Would you happen to have that information?? Thanks!!!
born2lbfat says
Just got out my handy dandy tape measure to check and it is near exactly 12 inches, close enough I call it 12 not 11 3/4…. from my wood floors. There is a alot of space, I kept suitcases underneath and double stacked some short storage containers.
Danielle says
Thanks so much for the info! I just saw this in the catalogue I got today and I might get it, more so now that I know it can hold my fat butt! Do you think it would hold over 600lbs? My sleeping buddy and I are both over 300 and I’m not sure what weight you tested it at.
born2lbfat says
That is approximately our combined weight, maybe close to 700lbs, however I need to mention my buddy does not live with me so it only occasionally holds the combined weight of both of us during sleep overs.
GirlwithNoBoxSpring says
This is great info Sarah. Since I don’t have a box spring, do you have the slats? If so, did you purchase them directly at Ikea? Any feedback is greatly appreciated
born2lbfat says
I have a box spring. You can buy slats or a foundation piece from Ikea.
katherine says
Omg. Your review was very helpful. I just bought this bed yesterday wondering if it will be able to hold me and my “slumber party buddy” I’m also overweight as well,so the durabilty and capacity was my main concern about the bed.Being that hollow medal doesn’t have a good rep, so thanks for this awsome review. Also did u figure out how to stop the beams from falling off? And I have a question relating to dressers and chests; after it’s built, does it look exactlty like the show room sample?
born2lbfat says
Which beams are falling? I’ve had no issues with the bed. I do own the MALM 3 drawer and 5 drawer dressers, in my opinion yes they look just like the showroom items. I put the 3 drawer together by myself, it was that easy. The 5 drawer since it was taller did require slumber buddy to help.
katherine says
Thanks! And the midbeam you was stating in the beginning or was that your old bed?
born2lbfat says
Old beds…any attempt at extra support failed. I once got 2×4 for extra support and they shifted and fell….as did the extra beams my mom bought with bed in 2004. This bed, the steal beam hooks in place.
Elaina says
This might be weird but is the bed squeaky or creaky?
born2lbfat says
Oh, um, no it doesn’t squeak or creak…nothing that I notice, the headboard is two pieces so when I got to sit in bed with laptop leaning against the headboard it hits the wall a bit, but really I’m rocking right now to “test” and the bed is barely making noise.
Jesea says
Okay so I am looking for a bed frame and this helped! Thank you for taking the risk for all of us! As being a bigger girl, and popped my share of air mattresses and one bed (in my defense it was a really old peg bed) with “Slumber Party” activities I am slightly nervous about a new bed, AND with the fact that two of my three dogs tend to sleep under the bed when there isn’t a slumber party in session I don’t wanna ever risk killing my dogs in such a horrific manner! Anyway do you need any special parts for the bed if you already have a box spring and mattress?
born2lbfat says
You will only need the frame, be sure to pick up the metal center beam in the warehouse area, it’s included in the price but is separate from the other boxes. Then you can just put box spring and mattress on frame. Enjoy!
lindsay says
i was going to purchase this. was wondering if you think it would be possible to assemble by myself?
born2lbfat says
Would not be impossible, the challenge will be holding the rail against the foot board to screw in the bolts, but you might just prop it on something.
Annie says
Hi thank you for your post! My only question is whether it makes any squeaky noise after awhile? Thx.
born2lbfat says
Owned for more than 3 years, has been taken apart and reassembled for move and still no squeaking.
Bonnie says
Hey Girl!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Such an unbiased and honest review!! Love it! IKEA should be giving you your next (upgrade) bed free for all the great promo you’re giving them!
PS I nearly peed myself with the “motionless vs not motionless” comments! Love it!
Jenn says
I am very interested in buying this bed. I just purchased a full size pillow top mattress and low profile foundation so I am wondering… Is it going to be too high to use my mattress and foundation on this bed? This is going to be used by my 4 year old daughter. Or should I only use the mattress by itself with the slats? Any help is appreciated. Could you post a photo of your bed with the mattress and foundation you are using so I can get a better idea? Thank you!
born2lbfat says
I will try to get a picture posted. I am 5’3″ and with my reg box spring and pillow top mattress the bed is a bit too high for me. Your low profile foundation might be helpful though. I’ll try to put my yard stick in the picture so you’ll have something to compare the height.
Hannah says
Hi, I’m interested in getting my room re-done next year, will this bed hold a person of 15st 10?
Thankyou x
born2lbfat says
I don’t know how much weight in pounds that is?
Christie says
Literally, what a godsend. I have to move. I’m broke. I have to buy a new bed or put my mattress on the floor. That’s not a good idea in Florida, where the cockroaches are as big as poodles and there’s nothing short of nuclear disaster that will eradicate them. Off to the IKEA site. But wait! I’m fat! Will this affordable-and-cute bed be okay? Hmm, might be okay for just me, but what if I ever meet someone new and want to have a sleep over? And what if he is also generously sized? To the Internet! And then I found your review. This is such a load off my mind. Please keep your site going. People like me need people like you! Thank you.

I used to live in Miami…them bugs be HUGE! Glad I could help!
Not Joking says
Hi,
I’ve been dying to ask somebody this question, and you seem the right person to answer after reading many reviews. I simply love this bed, but my partner doesn’t want me to buy it because he is afraid it will break during sex…vigorous sex… so… can you provide me advise on that? We are average sized… together no more than 360 pounds….
i am really ashamed of asking this!! but i am so fed up of beds making noises and threatening to break!
born2lbfat says
I weigh 360 (or more) myself. Even climbing across to make the bed, it doesn’t squeak. I’ve stood/walked on the bed. And again…thoroughly “tested” in my opinion. Think of it this way, with the price you are not taking a huge risk buying this bed!
Ellyn says
EXACTLY the information i was looking for! Thank you!!!

AWESOME REVIEW
any idea if I order this online because there isn’t an Ikea near my house, will they send the beam?
Thanks!
Ariona says
Hello,
Thanks for your review post. I’ve been eyeing this frame for a while and I’ve now decided to go through with purchasing. Regarding the bed, as you stated you use your own box spring and mattress, was anything needed for support underneath or did you just assemble the frame and put the mattress and box spring in the frame?
Crystal says
Thanks for the great review! I too have been looking at this bed for quite a while. Do you know if you can attach the headboard and footboard directly to an existing frame? Thanks!
Shafaq Baloch says
Hello,
I have had this bed since Christmas 2012. Since I have had it, it has stopped creaking or squeaking. Every time I move it makes a noise. I have tried tightening it up and everything! Does anyone know what could be the problem? I feel that the noise mostly comes from the legs of the bed.
Thanks
Is it just me? says
I love your review of the bed. I, too, am a large person and have had this bed in queen size for about three years using Ikea slats and my non-Ikea mattress I love the bed except for one thing. — it is very hard to change the sheets, It’s so difficult that I dread doing it. The mattress fits so tight in the frame that I have to lift the mattress to get the sheets on and it’s very hard to do. I’ve actually been looking for another bed because of this. This week I finally gave up and used a flat sheet on the bottom as well as the top so as not to lift the mattress. Is it just me or do others have this issue, too?
born2lbfat says
Since I use a box spring my mattress is elevated, my only bed making issue is climbing across to get to the far corner since my bed is against the wall. Maybe someone else will reply with a suggestion.
Is it just me? says
I really appreciate your quick response. Thank you so much.
Jeni says
This is exactly the type of review I was looking for, plus the sass and snark is a total bonus, lol. Hubs and I together weigh about 600lbs and have been searching for a bed to take the sometimes vigorous activities and normal slumbering that could hold our lovely, fat arses. So, yes, perfect review. As soon as we get this bed and test it out for a few months, I’ll come back and let you know how it holds up! Thanks again for the awesome review, doll!
born2lbfat says
I hope the current bed is the same quality as the one I have, I see a lot of people talking about squeaking, and honestly my bed does not squeak. But for the price, IMO, it’s worth buying and see how it works out! Have fun!
Tisha says
Hi, I’m So Glad To Hear You’re Comfortable With The Leirvik Bed, I Have it in Queen Size,But I’m a Little Confused… Does The Leirvik Queen Size Bed Needs Both (Box Spring & Top Mattress?? Or Just The Top Mattress?? Because i Have Both in The Bed, But It’s Very,Very High!! :/ i Don’t Know if It’s That High Cuz of The Mattresses Style or Because it Only Needs One Mattress, I Don’t Know… But i Apretiate Your Blog, & Your Time To Answer. 🙂 Thanx… <3 :-* *Tisha*
born2lbfat says
It needs a foundation, Ikea sells the slats or a low profile foundation. I am using a regular box spring and yes it makes my bed very high!
Lisa says
Sorry, I hate to be picky. The tested weight of the bed…does that include the weight of a mattress and foundation? They alone can weigh 120 pounds. Thanks in advance!
born2lbfat says
I did not ask Ikea that specifically, so I can answer from their “tests”. From my usage, I have mattress and box spring, full size, on the full size frame. I currently weigh 400lbs and have no issues with the bed. I did weigh less when I bought the bed, but my boyfriend and I easily weigh a combine 600lbs and have both slept in the bed when he stays overnight.
Lisa says
Thank you so much. Think I’ll go get me a King this weekend. This bed has been in my sights for months but I was scared of the sturdiness and quality. You’ve been a great help!
Shibizi says
Thanks for the review! I’ve had my mind set on buying this bed for months. I then talked myself out if it because it was made of epoxy not full metal. So I found an affordable metal bed that was so so, and had decided to go with it until your review. I’m a BBW and hubby is 6’4″ ! I’m buying this bed girl! Wish me luck!
Dani says
I have been so excited to buy this bed for months and now that I’m finally moving out and have the money to buy furniture, the IKEA website says it’s out of stock everywhere! I’m so picky with the design of furniture I like and cannot find anything else I’m happy with. Absolutely devastated!
Michelle says
Thank you so much, I was so concerned because my weight seems to be an issue for everything else. glad to know I can buy a bed and not have any issues with it, you should work for ikea, since you actually took the imitative to find out some valuable info unlike ikea who doesn’t seem to want to go that extra mile. Thank you girl
Adrianna says
Than you so much for this review. I am on a weight loss journey, but still very high up on the scale. I wanted this bed because of its beautiful girly look but when I saw those thin legs I got nervous. I’m 288lbs and I’ve tore some furniture up over the years. I’m so excited to be getting this bed this weekend based on your thorough and honest review!!!!
Nazihah says
Hi, thanks so much for the review! I can’t believe they doubled the price on this bed now! Well, I’ve been searching for one on craigslist now. One question, if I wanted to buy a memory foam bed, would putting the slats from ikea be enough support? What foundation does ikea sell for memory foam?
larita barton says
Hi I am needing a bed frame my first bed I have always slept on a couch. I weigh 484 pounds and I am 5″7 in height so what direction should I look at purchasing a bed frame … Your website is very nice also very helpful
Sarah Bramblette says
Larita,
Here is a bed frame available on Walmart.com that has a high weight capacity and is reasonably priced. I know IKEA is not an option for everyone since their stores are not located everywhere, and their shipping costs can be very high. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-Steel-Smart-Base-Bed-Frame-Black-Multiple-Sizes/15739163
Heidi says
Hi there! I saw on your post that you didnt buy the bed slats? so your current bed is just that frame with another companies box spring and mattress? Like if i go to sleep country and buy the box spring and mattress i want i can put that on the bed frame no problem? I love this frame so i was worried about all of that and thought id be stuck getting the bed slats and im not sure they would hold all 275 pounds of me =\
Peggy says
Do you know if wheels can be installed on the Leirvik?
Sarah Bramblette says
I do not know, but from what I see of the legs I do not think it’s possible. You should e-mail IKEA from their website and ask.
Denise says
So im considering buying this bed frame but im wondering if i need to get a box spring too? do you think this bed frame would work without a spring and just a mattress would work?
Sarah Bramblette says
You would need some type of foundation either slats, foundation, or box spring. The frame is just sideboards and the center beam, a mattress alone would fall through once you lay on it.
Angela says
We purchased this bed for my daughter off of craigslist. Put it together and it is extremely wobbly. The former owner has never had a problem with it not being sturdy (of course not). Any suggestions? I don’t think it’s the frame, it really seems like the legs are the culprit. It’s scary to sit on the bed it wobbles so much. Please, please, please know how we can fix this…otherwise I feel like we were totally scammed. 🙁
Sarah Bramblette says
I would try the IKEA website and see if you can check the instructions and make sure you have all the parts. I moved with mine 2 years ago, had the instructions for the movers to reassemble and all has been fine.
susie says
Hello Sarah,
I was wondering if you think the bed frame would be able to hold a king size Tempurpedic mattress? as all “temp” owners know the mattresses are very heavy by themselves, and then to add my weight I’m not sure lol… but I read in one of your replays that it hold 700lbs, so maybe it will hold.
Sarah Bramblette says
Susie,
Check out these frames from Walmart, I know surprise, but they have good reviews and hold up to 1200lbs. http://www.walmart.com/ip/15739163?34188924190

I have been looking for a bed for me and my husband we are both big people him 320 and me 300 when we moved out we bought a standard metal bed frame not even thinking about a weight limit it lasted about 2-3 months then one of the metal legs bent i felt like the fattest person ever now i been looking for a bed frame and im so scared not to mention my puppy sleeps under the bed i dont want the poor little dude to end up a pancake do you think this frame will hold us??
jim agans says
Thank You Sarah,
You are a very attractive woman due to your sense of humor, and great attitude. You are also damn good looking, which never hurts.
You finally answered the question I had, that is whether a standard box spring would fit in this frame and rest properly on the side rails without the slats. We just bought the full, and a large person will be using the bed. I intend to drill the flange on the side rails in three places per side, and screw #10 Multi-Purpose screws up into the cross-braces to keep the rails from spreading. I will also install a center block under the U-Rail. The center block should up the capacity considerably, as it will cut the long span in half.
Thanks Again, Sarah, Sleep well.
Raman says
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for this article. Quick question. I’m deciding between the Leirvik and the Hemnes. I already have an awesome mattress and boxspring but want a better frame. Do you think I need to buy the slats if I already have a box spring? I don’t want to get rid of my box spring, but I feel like most Ikea beds only work with mattresses.
Raman
Sarah Bramblette says
For the Leirvik you do not need the slats if you have your own box spring, actually in the store where I bought mine they used their IKEA foundation piece not slats. I do not have experience with the Hemnes bed, but when I was bed shopping at IKEA the salespeople were helpful and were the ones who told me I could use my own box spring verses them trying to sell me slats I didn’t need…they were honest.
Michelle says
Hi, I came across this feed in a search. I’m considering this bed. I also have my own box spring. I’m wondering does the center foundation bar support the box spring, or did you add the Ikea slats for the horizontal support across the bed? I guess I’m having a hard time understanding how one center bar can keep an entire queen bed from sagging. Thanks!
Michelle says
Duh! I just saw your post about the slats! Some reason I didn’t see it the first time. HA. So, no horizontal support needed. Thanks!
Christine says
This is so very helpful!!! My support weight concerns include my incredibly heavy mattress and uh extracurricular activities, particular with squeaking (I live with family). That a support beam is included is crucial, and yet mentioned nowhere on the Ikea site! You’ve helped me make my decision – had to throw out my old frame and box spring because of bedbugs, and needed an inexpensive replacement. Also the Ikea site doesn’t mention the underbed clearance height – 12″ storage underneath for my suitcase is fantastic .
miguel says
Hi I’m a really sexual person and want to know if the bed squeaks couse I don’t want anyone to here me if I sneak someone in. Thanks for the result. And your really cute I’m gay but if I wasn’t…..:-);)Omg. Your definitely a gorgeous woman. Thought you should know. It’s always good to complement people and let them know the beauty they have. Hope to here from you soon thank You so much. So so much
Sarah Bramblette says
To me the bed does not squeak but I’ve seen others comment that it does, perhaps how tight the frame is put together, perhaps newer produced beds are different than mine from many years ago. I’m not sure what would cause the difference.
Yvette L says
Ok so basically if I buy theneed with the slats and a use my regular non ikea mattress I should be fine?
Yvette L says
^the bed (whoops!)
Kaylee says
Hey! Thought that I’d add to the convo since I’d seen someone asking about solo- DIY assembly– with this bed, there are literally only 6 pieces, and 8 screws and bolt things (two per side per post)
I’ve moved this bed multiple times myself, and I am not exactly crafty. Having a shoebox or something approximately the height of the beams is helpful, and really all you need!

Hi unsure if this question has been answered or not. But, if you do not have a box spring I should probably get the slats? Just want to make sure I do the right thing!

Hey Sarah!
I found this bed a while back in the Ikea website and have been dying to buy it for a couple months now, but I’m wondering which option is better with the box spring or the slats/foundation. I’m on the taller side, about 5’9” and the ceilings in my apartment do that sort of annoying downward slanted thing since I’m on the second floor. I read through almost all of the other reviews and you mentioned a few times how tall the bed was with your box spring. Could you measure how tall it actually is? I’m worried about hitting my head on the ceiling haha! I’ve been sleeping on my mattress on the floor since I moved in August and it’s really starting to bother my back! Being around 310lbs I was worried about buying an average bed frame but my wallet isn’t up for anything much more expensive then the Leirvik.
Thanks!

Thanks for the review, this will be my christmas gift!

Hi! I have bought the leirvik bed frame and am having trouble screwing in the footboard to headboard, the sides don’t seem to connect properly. Any suggestions?

I’m glad this bed has worked out for you . unfortunately I can’t say the same . within a few months of purchase the legs began to loosen up after about 6 months the legs started to come off we tried everything even the strongest bonding material it worked temporarly . Tragically one day my husband and I were sleeping our pup happened to be sleeping under the bed . One slight shift the legs flew off the bed fell to the ground and our toy poodle was severely injured . He didn’t make it . I have been forever traumatized . I would not recommend This bed to anyone!.

Jennifer, I am so sorry this happened to you. I’m disturbed that an author who responded to every question didn’t acknowledge this tragedy caused by the same product they’re (voluntarily) promoting. Wishing you peace.
Sarah Bramblette says
Ash, If you cared to look around I haven’t replied recently or even updated my blog. Nor have I replied to EVERY question. I actually stopped replying because 1. people ask questions already answered 2. I no longer use the bed. 3. I acknowledge there might have been changes made by IKEA to the product. 4. There was no question to answer here. As you pointed out I’m not compensated for blog, is that supposed to make it worse that I share information I found helpful? Or would you prefer I got paid to promote the product?

Hi sarah!
Found all these posts on a uk site about the leirvik bed..i have this bed.ikea king size. Well for the first 2 months was fine. Bt now squeeks like mad!! Head & feetend, even my four year old makes it sqweek..ikea are replacing it tuesday bt im guesaing new one will do the same..kills my back aswell, dunno if thats just to do with shift in my weight though from 2nd baby 6months ago. On the whole i love the bed but its driving me mad!! Any i can so apart from put something under slats to stop it happening again i wonder?
Oh was going to say.. bet u wish u hadnt started this..lots of people asking the same thing..
Sarah Bramblette says
Makes me think the quality of the product has changed since I purchased my bed. Too many people have made similar comments recently. It’s a shame because I really like mine, but happens all too often with many items.

Jennifer your comment from 1 dec worries me. Our bed has squeaked since day one. One of the legs seemed to loosen up at the join which causes the bed to sway from side to side… it seems both of the back legs are now loose where the join the frame. Worried they will snap if we rollover too much. Together my husband & i weigh 125kgs so weight is not an issue here. Im worried next time we rollover the legs will give way. Our ragdoll kitten loves to sleep under the bed! Im shopping for a new bed today. Sorry for your loss.

My hubby and I are larger people together we are over 500lbs. We have the bed you are referring to and we broke it. The legs are attached toe headboard and footboard and therefore their durability is weakened. We bent the 2 headboard legs from our “activities”. WE removed the 4 legs and now the bed is on the floor for the time being. I’m 6 months pregnant and we are looking at a wooden bed frame since it is getting harder for me to get out of bed- especially in the middle of the night. for pee breaks!
We have the king- btw

Check out this bed frame from Wal-mart, inexpensive yet has a very high weight capacity. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-Steel-Smart-Base-Bed-Frame-Black-Multiple-Sizes/15739163

Hi! Thank you so much for all the info! I am thinking of buying this for my 4 yr old daughter: it’s $130 online with the slats. I already have a memory foam mattress for her. Do you think it would be a good choice for her? 🙂 Thanks again!

Hey, I was wondering if I could combine the walmart steel frame with the MALM bed, my boyfriend is close to 400lbs and I’m 250lbs so I still worried, I was thinking of getting the bed frame for his birthday which is in like 9 days!!
kirstina aysha says
do you need to have a boxspring for this bed? i have a boxspring and i dont like it because its way to high! but i also dont want to buy slats. without the slats and the boxspring, will the bed hold?
Sarah Bramblette says
The time it took you to leave your comment you could have found the answer by reading the article.

My friend has a 2014 Lexus IS350. Would the bed frame fit into the car or would I need a big truck to drive this home?
Sarah Bramblette says
All IKEA furniture comes in flat boxes. Mine was transported in the trunk of a 2009 Honda Civic, back seat folded down. We had to take the head board piece out of the box to work it in…remember full size. I believe the IKEA website gives the dimensions of the packages.
Jen says
Thanks!! I didn’t see that you had posted a reply. Disregard my post below. So it is doable!
Jindy says
Thanks for the information! I recently went to IKEA (1.5 hours from my home), and I was informed that this bed would not fit and that we would have to have it shipped for $150. Eeeeks. For that price ($150 for bed plus $150 for delivery), I was contemplating buying a bed from a place with free delivery. But since I love the bed and the fact that it’ll fit into my car (hopefully… crossing fingers), I’ll attempt that first.
BTW… how did you dismantle the headboard? And do I have to fold the backseat down to fit the parts?
Sarah Bramblette says
Didn’t dismantle the headboard, just took it out of the package so without the cardboard, and other packaging the overall size was smaller and it fit. Yes, back seat down, the length the rails will have to fit.
Jen says
Were you able to fit this bedframe into your car? My friend has a Lexus IS350 which is a small sedan, and I’m wondering if the bedframe parts will all fit into the car.
cheryl says
As for bed frames, I got the Knickerbocker Embrace frame. No wheels, stylish! Its a little more pricey but well worth it, because even though its light weight (which is surprising because its apparently made of railroad steel), its easy to assemble/disassemble(the beams slide in pockets, so you dont need tools to put it together)
but the best part? It can hold up to 2000 pounds! So even a big girl could literally jump up and down on the bed. Or have several people on the bed at once. The frame can handle it. The box spring/mattress? Thats another story.
Ive had this for several months. Im really happy with it.
Im now on the hunt to replace my broken box spring. Its as you say, trying to find a box spring by itself????? King Koil has a bed frame foundation that looks like its really good… its extra life, or something, not sure on the name, but you can find it on their site. The only issue is that I cant find anywhere that will sell me just the foundation.
So that leaves me with having someone build me a foundation similar to the King Koil one… or another option is from Forever Foundations… however their frame that is full size, has legs. I already have my frame… Im not sure if I could get this thing, and just not attach the legs.. would it fit in my frame. Nor do I know its weight capacity. Thats how I stumbled on this page.
The post is outdated by several years but I see from the comments several people (including me) are still finding it.. so I thought Id share what I found so far…
Dani says
Uh no don’t buy the Malm. Mine just broke after two years. I’m heavier and hubby isn’t. The center support ripped off and the headboard collapsed. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Apparently it’s a very common problem.

Thanks for the review! Very helpful. I am needing to know the height of the bed from floor to bottom of the frame (I need to know if I can fit our twin trendle bed under it:) I would appreciate it if you could forward me this info since It is not posted anywhere in the item description and I have a 2 hour hike to our nearest IKEA. Thanks!

i purchased this bed in May 2015…Easy to assemble and 1 month after it started making squeaking noise, so i took the mattress and box spring off and started tightening the screws it helped a lil. Then i put some wd40 and that was the life saver, the squeaking went away Yay!!!. Now im 4 months in and it started swaying back and forth, like the legs dont work. This bed is getting normal use, and now it seems like i have to replace the legs. I have read a review where the person had to replace the legs twice. Now im starting to regret this purchase
Mel says
Just wondering if you picked the Luroy or Lonset for the bedframe??
Lulu says
Have you had any issue with squeaky sounds since you’ve had the bed? Thnx
Tara says
Hi! With this metal bed frame, did you find it was noisy and squeaky? Mine is and im desperately finding a way to remedy it. Thanks!
Sarah Bramblette says
Mine was not squeaky, but I’ve had other comments about that and I wonder if it’s an issue with newer model. I’d suggest to make sure the hardware is tightened as much as possible.
Jen says
I’m currently having a problem finding a foundation that won’t break. I have a memory foam mattress and after just 3 months one of the wood beams of the foundation cracked. I had to pay to replace it of course. And then just 2 weeks later it broke again. Now I have my bed on the floor but I can feel the foundation getting worse. I feel bad for my partner because it always breaks on her side. I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re making foundations for these memory foam mattresses cheaply because my ex weighed at least 50 lbs heavier than my current partner and never had a problem with that box spring . I want to buy a new foundation or platform bed but I don’t want to shell out money on something that might break quickly. Any suggestions on something that could easily hold well over 500 lbs? Most platforms I found online have a 500 lbs weight limit and I’d want it to be stronger. Like at least 600 lbs
Sarah Bramblette says
Hi Jen,
I actually upgraded to a queen size bed with memory mattress and this is the frame I bought. Great price, high weight capacity and delivered free, easy set up. Not pretty but you can purchase the hardware to attach a headboard. Twin/twin XL: maximum weight capacity of 1,200 lbs.
Queen/king/Cal king: maximum weight capacity of 2,400 lbs.

Hi! Thank you so much for this post, it has been EXTREMELY helpful. From what I’ve gathered the newer version of the bed is not as structurally sound and the legs have a tendency to bend. That being said, I was thinking about just placing my queen size bed on the full size platform bed from Walmart you have posted above and having that support my mattress. Then, the leirvik would go around my mattress and be more just for show. Do you think that would work?

Matracos says
Choosing the right mattress requires an extensive research and analysis, especially when you are overweight. There are many online mattress reviewing sites. But everyone recommends different mattresses. Every mattresses are not going to suit every one. Choosing a mattress for heavy people should be based on your sleeping style, postures and preferences. Also, the user must make sure that the mattress they are buying, is not going to give them any neck or back pain, in the future.
Well, I can give you some tips that can help you in mattress buying decision
The thickness of the mattress is one crucial factorto be considered while buying a mattress for heavier people. Thicker, the mattress, better the support you get. It relieves you from pressure point pain.
The firmness level depends on your sleeping positions – like side sleeping, stomach sleeping or back sleeping. Most of the heavier people, prefer medium firm mattresses, as they support their weight better and give more support.
People who weigh high can also go for mattress that offers edge support. As such mattresses with coil-on-coil, spring or a combination of these two, is best advised.
The last factor to be considered is about mattress heat retention. The mattresses good for not retaining heat includes latex mattresses, spring mattresses and memory foam infused with gel.
Brands that are recommended for large people includes
Lucid 14 inch plush memory foam and latex mattress, is considered to be good mattress for heavy people. As it comes with one inch of charcoal memory foam at the top, this is ideal for people with sensitive skin.
Sleep Innovation’s Sure Temp 12” memory foam mattress has been the favorite among the over weighed people. It comes with a 2.5” thick memory foam. It’s not too plushy and prevents sinkage.
Cool Breeze 12 inch memory foam mattress is another top rated mattress for heavy people. The mattress has also earned it’s name for relieving back pain and spinal injuries. The mattress features a 3 inch thick cooling formula that allows greater airflow, which is very beneficial during the summer.
Ikea is also a good choice for overweight people. It fits into the budget and provides the exact comfort and support, users are looking for. but as each person has varying sleep styles and needs, it depends on personal choice.
