United States Military Payment Certificate (MPC) from the Series 461, issued in 1946. These $1 notes were used to pay U.S. military personnel in various countries overseas from September 1946 to March 1947.
Key Information
Purpose: MPCs were created to control black market activity and prevent U.S. currency from causing inflation in local economies of occupied or stationed areas after World War II. They were the official medium of exchange within U.S. military bases and facilities only.
Usage: They could be exchanged for local currency by authorized personnel, but local currency could not be converted back into MPCs or U.S. dollars.
Withdrawal: The entire series became worthless after a secret, pre-announced "conversion day" when personnel exchanged old series notes for new ones, effectively stopping black marketeers from using the old currency.
